Overview

The human host adaptive immune system is a sophisticated subsystem of the overall immune system composed of highly specialized cells and processes that eliminate pathogens or prevent their growth. It is characterized by the ability to recognize and remember specific pathogens, providing long-term immunity through immunological memory (StatPearls, 2023; NIH, 2020). The primary components include B lymphocytes, which produce antibodies, and T lymphocytes, which mediate cellular immunity and regulate the overall response (Wikipedia, 2024). Dysregulation of this system is central to various pathologies, including autoimmune diseases where the system attacks host tissues, and cancers that evade immune detection (PubMed, 2021). Pharmacological intervention typically targets specific components of this system, such as using monoclonal antibodies to neutralize cytokines or checkpoint inhibitors to enhance T-cell activity against tumors (NIH, 2020).
