Overview

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus negative regulatory factor protein, commonly known as Nef, is a small myristoylated accessory protein encoded by primate lentiviruses, including HIV-1 and HIV-2. Nef is not a structural component of the virus but plays a critical role in viral pathogenesis and persistence. It is essential for high-level viral replication and virulence. Nef downregulates CD4, MHC-I and CTLA‑4; modulates signaling, apoptosis and cytoskeleton.
