Target intelligence / Profile preview
Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) is a retrovirus and the primary causative agent of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). It infects human immune cells, leading to progressive immune system failure and increased susceptibility to opportunistic infections. Key targets within HIV-1 for therapeutic intervention include reverse transcriptase, protease, integrase, gp120, and gp41. The virus hijacks cellular machinery for replication; new virions bud off with portions of the host membrane containing embedded viral glycoproteins. HIV infection leads to depletion of CD4+ T-cells leading toward AIDS.
Varies depending on the targeted protein; includes inhibition of reverse transcription, protease activity, integrase activity, viral entry, and CD4 attachment.
