Overview

Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) clade B antigens expressed via the Modified Vaccinia virus Ankara (MVA-B) vector are a set of viral proteins used as targets for vaccine-induced immunity. The MVA-B vector is engineered to express the Gag, Pol, Nef, and Env proteins from the HIV-1 clade B subtype, which is the most common strain in Europe and North America (Gómez et al., 2011, PubMed: 21835787). These antigens serve as the primary targets for the host's immune system, specifically aiming to elicit broad and durable T-cell and B-cell responses (García et al., 2011, PubMed: 22013221). The Gag-Pol-Nef (GPN) fusion protein and the Env protein (gp120) are processed by host cells and presented to the immune system to trigger the production of HIV-specific CD8+ cytotoxic T lymphocytes and CD4+ helper T cells. This target is central to the development of both prophylactic and therapeutic vaccines intended to control viral load or prevent initial infection (Guardo et al., 2017, PubMed: 28254967). Clinical trials have demonstrated that these antigens, when delivered via the MVA-B vector, are highly immunogenic and maintain a favorable safety profile in humans.
