01

Overview

The HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein gp160 is a precursor protein essential for viral entry into host cells. It is encoded by the env gene of HIV-1 and undergoes complex post-translational processing to form the mature envelope spike on the virus surface. After cleavage, it forms gp120 (responsible for receptor binding to CD4 and coreceptors CCR5 or CXCR4) and gp41 (mediates fusion between viral and cellular membranes). It is a key target for neutralizing antibodies and entry inhibitors.
