The HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein (Env) is an oligomeric complex critical for virus entry via receptor-mediated attachment and membrane fusion. It consists of two subunits—gp120 (binding) and gp41 (fusion)—derived from cleavage of precursor protein gp160.
