Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 Envelope Protein (HIV-1 Env)

Target
HIV-1 Env
Molecular classification
Viral Protein, Glycoprotein, Fusion Protein
01

Overview

The HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein (Env) is a trimeric complex found on the surface of the virus. It is essential for viral entry into host cells and serves as the primary target for neutralizing antibodies and vaccine development. Env mediates attachment to host cell receptors, triggers membrane fusion, and initiates infection. It is synthesized as gp160, then cleaved into gp120 (surface glycoprotein) and gp41 (transmembrane glycoprotein). The functional Env complex is a trimer of gp120-gp41 heterodimers.
