Target intelligence / Profile preview
The Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 RNA genome (HIV-1 RNA) is a single-stranded, positive-sense RNA, approximately 9.2–9.7 kb in length, that encodes all structural, enzymatic, and accessory proteins required for HIV-1 replication and pathogenesis. Packaged as two copies per virion, the genome is dimerized and associated with nucleocapsid proteins inside the viral capsid. The genome contains key regulatory and structural elements, including long terminal repeats (LTRs), packaging signals, and multiple highly structured RNA elements crucial for reverse transcription, dimerization, splicing, protein synthesis, and genome packaging. It is not a standard drug target itself, but plays a foundational role in viral replication and as a clinical biomarker (viral load). If your intention was to refer to a specific protein encoded by HIV-1 (e.g., reverse transcriptase, integrase, etc.), a different and more precise canonical name should be used. If instead you are interested in nucleic acid-based targeting approaches (antisense, CRISPR, etc.), this should also be specified for structured data.
Not applicable Standard mechanisms (inhibition, antagonism) do not apply to the whole viral genome as a drug target; mechanisms refer to interference with encoded enzymes or genome-directed antisense/oligonucleotide approaches (mostly experimental).
