Overview

The HIV-1 Tat protein (Trans-Activator of Transcription) is a small, regulatory viral protein essential for efficient transcription and replication of the HIV-1 genome. It binds to the TAR RNA element and recruits host cellular factors to enhance transcriptional elongation. Tat also modulates cellular gene expression, alters immune responses, and facilitates viral spread. It is considered a potential therapeutic target.
