Human immunodeficiency virus type 2 reverse transcriptase (HIV-2 RT) is a multifunctional enzyme essential for the replication of HIV-2, a retrovirus responsible for AIDS. It catalyzes the conversion of viral single-stranded RNA into double-stranded DNA. HIV-2 RT is a heterodimeric protein composed of two subunits: p68 and p55. It exhibits intrinsic resistance to non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs). Treatment regimens must rely on other antiretroviral classes such as protease inhibitors or integrase inhibitors.
