The viral infectivity factor (Vif) is an accessory protein encoded by HIV-1 and HIV-2, essential for efficient viral replication in non-permissive cells. Vif counteracts the antiviral activity of APOBEC3 family proteins by inducing their ubiquitination and proteasomal degradation. It also interacts with TP53 to induce G2 cell cycle arrest. Because it antagonizes key innate immune defenses, Vif represents an attractive target for antiretroviral drug development.
