Human Leukocyte Antigen – DR (HLA-DR)

HLA-DR is a cell surface receptor belonging to the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II family. It is primarily involved in presenting peptide antigens to the immune system, specifically to T-helper cells. While typically found on professional antigen-presenting cells, HLA-DR can also be expressed by non-immune epithelial cells under certain conditions, particularly in response to inflammatory stimuli on the ocular surface. Its expression level serves as a biomarker for ocular surface inflammation and disease severity, especially in dry eye disease.
