Overview

Human leukocyte antigen class I histocompatibility antigen A-24 (HLA-A*24) is a cell surface MHC class I protein encoded by the HLA-A gene, highly polymorphic and found on most nucleated cells. It binds short peptide fragments derived from intracellular proteins and presents them to CD8+ cytotoxic T lymphocytes, enabling immune surveillance against infected or malignant cells. The HLA-A*24 variant is one of many alleles with unique peptide-binding preferences that influence susceptibility to infectious, autoimmune, and neoplastic diseases as well as transplant outcomes[2][3][4][5][7][8].

Mechanism of action

Presentation of intracellular peptide antigens (including viral, tumor, and self-peptides) to CD8+ T lymphocytes, triggering immune responses[2][3][4][7].

05

Safety considerations

Transplant rejection (alloreactivity against mismatched HLA-A*24)Potential for immune adverse events if targeted or mismatched (e.g., graft-versus-host disease)Disease association (increased risk or protection in some conditions, allele-specific; e.g., association with type 1 diabetes, certain infectious and autoimmune diseases)
06

Interacting drugs

Null (no specific small molecule or biologic directly targeting HLA-A*24 for therapeutic modulation; relevant for donor-recipient matching in transplantation and immunotherapies)
07

Biomarkers

HLA-A*24 allele typing (biomarker for risk stratification in certain cancers, infectious diseases, and transplant compatibility)
