Human leukocyte antigen class II (HLA class II) proteins are cell surface glycoproteins that present processed extracellular antigens to CD4+ T lymphocytes, initiating and regulating immune responses. They are heterodimers composed of α and β chains, with a peptide-binding groove formed by the α1 and β1 domains. HLA Class II molecules are expressed on professional antigen-presenting cells (APCs) and are crucial for adaptive immunity. Polymorphisms in HLA class II genes are associated with susceptibility to autoimmune and infectious diseases, as well as transplant rejection.
