Human Leukocyte Elastase (HLE)

Target
HLE
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Serine protease, Endopeptidase
01

Overview

Human leukocyte elastase (HLE), also known as neutrophil elastase, is a serine protease stored in neutrophils and released during inflammation. It degrades extracellular matrix proteins and cleaves plasma proteins, playing roles in neutrophil migration, phagocytosis, tissue remodeling, and pathogen destruction. Excessive HLE activity is implicated in diseases such as emphysema, cystic fibrosis, and rheumatoid arthritis, making it a therapeutic target. Natural and synthetic inhibitors can reduce its activity.
