Human mucin 1 (MUC1) is an extensively O-glycosylated type I transmembrane protein found predominantly on epithelial surfaces. It acts both as a protective barrier under physiological conditions and plays key roles during malignant transformation when aberrantly expressed/glycosylated. Its unique structure—with highly repetitive tandem repeat domains—makes it an attractive target for cancer diagnostics and immunotherapies due to frequent upregulation across diverse human cancers combined with limited normal tissue reactivity.
