Human mucosal epithelial cells are the principal structural cells comprising the lining of mucous membranes found throughout the body's surfaces exposed to the external environment, including the respiratory, intestinal, and urogenital tracts. These cells form a continuous layer that serves as both a physical barrier and an immunological interface between the internal environment and potentially harmful exogenous agents, such as pathogens and toxins. Their key roles include producing mucus and antimicrobial substances, regulating immune responses, absorbing nutrients, and mediating selective permeability. Mucosal epithelial cells also participate in innate and adaptive immunity by secreting cytokines, presenting antigens, and maintaining immune tolerance. Disease and dysfunction of these cells contribute to inflammation, infection, and cancer.
