The human nasopharyngeal mucosa is the specialized tissue layer lining the nasopharynx, the uppermost part of the pharynx located behind the nasal cavity (The Human Protein Atlas). While the mucosa itself is an anatomical structure rather than a single molecular target, specific proteins within it, such as the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) and immune checkpoint molecules like PD-1, are targeted by drugs like cetuximab and toripalimab to treat associated diseases (American Cancer Society, Pharmaceutical Technology).
Therapeutic agents targeting diseases of the nasopharyngeal mucosa act through various mechanisms, including the inhibition of the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) to stop cancer cell proliferation, the blockade of the PD-1/PD-L1 immune checkpoint to enhance anti-tumor immunity, and the activation of alpha-adrenergic receptors to induce vasoconstriction and relieve congestion (National Institutes of Health, American Cancer Society).
