Overview

Human papillomavirus 58 major capsid protein L1 (HPV-58 L1) is the primary structural protein forming the outer shell of HPV-58 virions. It self-assembles into pentamers and, together with 71 other pentamers, builds an icosahedral capsid that protects the viral genome and mediates initial attachment to host cells[1][2][3][5]. L1 is highly immunogenic and serves as the key antigen in current prophylactic HPV vaccines, which exploit its ability to form virus-like particles (VLPs) that closely mimic the native virus structure and elicit strong neutralizing antibody responses[2][4][6]. Neutralizing antibodies raised against HPV-58 L1 specifically block HPV-58 infection by targeting surface-exposed loops on the L1 protein, preventing viral attachment and entry. Variation in L1 sequences can influence antibody binding and vaccine efficacy among different HPV genotypes[3][4][6].
