Overview

Human Papillomavirus DNA (HPV DNA) refers to the genetic material of HPV, a non-enveloped virus. Its ~8 kb circular double-stranded DNA encodes viral replication and assembly machinery. HPV DNA's clinical relevance lies in its association with various cancers, primarily cervical cancer, and its use as a target for diagnostic tests and prophylactic vaccines. Persistent infection, especially with high-risk types like HPV 16 and 18, can lead to cellular transformation and malignancy. The HPV DNA genome contains early genes (E1-E7) that regulate viral replication and cell cycle, and late genes (L1 and L2) encoding capsid proteins. Detection of HPV DNA through PCR or hybridization is a common diagnostic method. Vaccines target L1 capsid protein, inducing neutralizing antibodies.
