Overview

Human papillomavirus (HPV)-expressing cells are human epithelial cells, primarily basal keratinocytes, that have been infected by HPV and express viral genes, particularly the oncogenes E6 and E7. These cells are central to the pathogenesis of HPV-associated diseases, including cervical cancer and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma. Persistent infection with high-risk HPVs leads to continuous expression of viral oncoproteins, resulting in altered cellular adhesion, proliferation rates, apoptosis resistance, extracellular matrix remodeling—and ultimately contribute to carcinogenesis.
