Human Papillomavirus L1 Capsid Protein Type 16 (HPV16 L1)

Target
HPV16 L1
Molecular classification
Viral structural protein, Capsid protein
01

Overview

The L1 protein is the major capsid protein of Human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV16). It plays a central role in forming the viral capsid and in mediating infection. Recombinant expression of HPV16 L1 leads to spontaneous assembly into virus-like particles (VLPs) that closely mimic native virions but lack infectious DNA. These VLPs are highly immunogenic and form the basis for current prophylactic HPV vaccines.

Mechanism of action

L1 proteins self-assemble into virus-like particles (VLPs) that elicit a strong neutralizing antibody response, preventing HPV infection.
