The L1 capsid protein is the major structural protein of human papillomavirus (HPV), including type 6. It forms the outer shell (capsid) of the virus. The L1 protein can self-assemble into virus-like particles (VLPs) that closely mimic the natural surface of HPV virions. These VLPs are highly immunogenic and form the basis for current prophylactic HPV vaccines. The primary role of L1 is to encapsulate and protect the ~8 kb viral DNA genome and facilitate attachment to host cells.
