Human Papillomavirus Type 11 L1 Capsid Protein (HPV-11 L1)

Target
HPV-11 L1
Molecular classification
Viral structural protein, Capsid protein
01

Overview

The L1 protein is the major capsid protein of human papillomavirus type 11 (HPV-11), a small, non-enveloped, double-stranded DNA virus. It is essential for forming the viral capsid and plays a central role in the assembly of virus-like particles (VLPs) used in HPV vaccines. The L1 protein self-assembles into pentameric structures (capsomeres) which then form an icosahedral capsid. The C-terminal region contains a DNA-binding domain. VLPs composed of recombinant HPV type 11 L1 induce strong type-specific immune responses. The use of HPV vaccines has proven to be highly effective in preventing HPV infections and associated diseases.

Mechanism of action

The L1 protein is the primary antigen used in HPV vaccines. VLPs formed by L1 stimulate a strong neutralizing antibody response, preventing viral infection.
