The major capsid protein L1 from Human Papillomavirus Type 11 (HPV-11) is a key component in prophylactic HPV vaccines. L1 self-assembles into virus-like particles (VLPs) that mimic the native virion structure but lack viral DNA, rendering them non-infectious. These VLPs are highly immunogenic, inducing strong type-specific neutralizing antibody responses that prevent HPV-11 infection. Vaccines containing HPV-11 L1 VLPs, such as Gardasil and Gardasil 9, are used to protect against diseases caused by HPV types including genital warts and respiratory papillomatosis. Recombinant HPV11 L1 is produced primarily in *Saccharomyces cerevisiae*.
