Target intelligence / Profile preview

Human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV16)

Target
HPV16
Molecular classification
Virus, DNA virus
01

Overview

HPV16 is a small double-stranded DNA virus that infects mucosal epithelial cells via specific cell surface receptors. It causes a significant proportion of anogenital and head-and-neck cancers worldwide due to its potent oncogenic proteins E6/E7 that disrupt normal cell cycle control mechanisms. Vaccination remains the most effective preventive measure against diseases caused by this virus.
