Overview

Human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV-16) is a high-risk, oncogenic virus responsible for approximately 50% of cervical cancers. The HPV-16 antigen refers to viral proteins that can elicit an immune response, most notably the L1 capsid protein (used in vaccines), as well as early oncoproteins E6 and E7, which are critical for viral replication and cellular transformation. The L1 VLP induces strong antibody responses that prevent infection. Early antigens E6/E7 elicit T-cell responses important for clearance of infected/transformed cells. Vaccines containing recombinant HPV‑16 antigens provide effective prophylaxis against persistent infection. Therapeutic strategies target early proteins such as E6/E7 due to their role in oncogenesis.
