Human Papillomavirus Type 16 E6 Oncoprotein (E6)

Target
E6
Molecular classification
Oncoprotein
01

Overview

The E6 oncoprotein from human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV16) is a viral protein that plays a central role in the development and maintenance of HPV-associated cancers, particularly cervical cancer. It induces cellular transformation and immortalization by promoting degradation of tumor suppressor p53 and interfering with its transcriptional activity. E6 also activates telomerase, inhibits apoptosis, and modulates immune responses, contributing to oncogenesis. Disruption of E6 function is a promising therapeutic strategy.
