Human Papillomavirus Type 16 E6 Protein (HPV16 E6)

Target
HPV16 E6
Molecular classification
Oncoprotein, Viral protein
01

Overview

The E6 protein is an oncoprotein encoded by the high-risk human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV-16), a major causative agent of cervical cancer and other HPV-associated malignancies. It plays a central role in the induction and maintenance of cellular transformation, enabling viral replication, cell immortalization, and evasion of host immune responses. E6 acts primarily through targeting the tumor suppressor p53 for degradation, upregulating telomerase activity, and inhibiting apoptosis and immune responses.

Mechanism of action

Targets tumor suppressor proteins (p53, MAGI-1, SAP97/hDlg, DLG1, NFX1, BAK1, FADD, procaspase 8) for degradation; activates telomerase; inhibits interferon signaling.
