The major capsid protein L1 of human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV16) is the principal structural protein forming the outer shell (capsid) of the virus. It plays a critical role in viral assembly, infectivity, and immunogenicity. L1 self-assembles into virus-like particles (VLPs), even when expressed recombinantly, and these VLPs form the basis for licensed HPV vaccines. Neutralizing antibodies generated against conformational epitopes on assembled pentamers can block infection effectively.
