Overview
Human papillomavirus type 18 (HPV-18) is a high-risk HPV subtype strongly associated with cervical and other cancers. Its oncogenic potential stems from viral proteins E6 and E7, which disrupt cell cycle regulation. Prophylactic vaccines targeting HPV-18 can prevent infection and reduce cancer risk. HPV-18 exhibits genetic diversity with multiple lineages and sequence variants.

Mechanism of action
Vaccines stimulate an immune response to prevent infection. E6 and E7 oncoproteins promote degradation of tumor suppressor p53 and inactivate retinoblastoma protein pRb, leading to uncontrolled cell proliferation.
