Human Papillomavirus Type 18 E6 Protein

Molecular classification
Oncoprotein, Viral protein, Transcription factor regulator, E3 ubiquitin ligase recruiter
01

Overview

The E6 protein is an oncogenic protein encoded by the human papillomavirus type 18 (HPV-18) genome. It plays a central role in HPV-induced cellular transformation and is directly implicated in the development of cervical cancer and other HPV-related malignancies. E6 acts primarily by degrading the tumor suppressor p53, activating telomerase, and modulating the immune response. It interacts with host cell proteins, including E6AP, to achieve these functions.

02

Mechanism of action

Recruits E6AP ubiquitin ligase to degrade p53; activates hTERT to increase telomerase activity; inhibits interferon signaling.
