Overview

Human papillomavirus type 18 (HPV18) L1 virus-like particles (VLPs) are recombinant structures composed of the major capsid protein L1, which self-assembles into particles that morphologically and antigenically resemble the native virion but lack the viral genome (UniProt P06794). These VLPs serve as the primary antigenic component in prophylactic vaccines designed to prevent infections by HPV18, a high-risk genotype responsible for approximately 15-20% of cervical cancers globally (PMID: 15135118). Upon administration, the VLPs trigger a robust humoral immune response, leading to the production of type-specific neutralizing antibodies (FDA Gardasil 9 Label). These antibodies bind to the L1 protein on the surface of actual HPV18 virions during subsequent exposure, thereby blocking viral attachment and entry into host epithelial cells. By preventing persistent infection, these VLPs effectively reduce the incidence of HPV-associated precancerous lesions and malignancies (WHO HPV Position Paper). The use of HPV18 L1 VLPs represents a cornerstone in global public health efforts to eliminate cervical cancer and other HPV-related diseases.
