The major capsid protein L1 of human papillomavirus type 18 (HPV18) is the principal structural protein forming the outer capsid of the virus. It is critical for viral assembly, infectivity, and immunogenicity. L1 proteins self-assemble into virus-like particles (VLPs) that form the basis of prophylactic vaccines against HPV18.
VLPs generated from L1 protein elicit neutralizing antibodies that prevent viral entry into host cells.
