Overview

Human papillomavirus type 27 (HPV-27) is a non-enveloped, double-stranded DNA virus belonging to the Alphapapillomavirus genus. It is a cutaneous HPV type primarily associated with the development of common warts (verruca vulgaris), which typically manifest on the hands and feet. Unlike high-risk mucosal HPV types such as HPV-16 and HPV-18, HPV-27 is considered a low-risk type and is not typically linked to the development of malignancies. The viral life cycle is dependent on the differentiation of host epithelial cells, where viral proteins such as E6 and E7 interact with host cell cycle regulators to facilitate viral replication, although they do so with lower affinity than high-risk types. Current therapeutic strategies for HPV-27 infections do not involve direct-acting antivirals but instead focus on the physical destruction of infected tissue or the modulation of the host immune response. Common treatments include keratolytic agents like salicylic acid, immunomodulators like imiquimod, and destructive methods such as cryotherapy or trichloroacetic acid application.
