Human papillomavirus type 31 (HPV-31) is a non-enveloped, double-stranded DNA virus in the Papillomaviridae family, closely related to HPV-16 and classified in Alphapapillomavirus, species alpha-9. Like other high-risk HPVs, it infects mucosal keratinocytes and is implicated in cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and cancer, with viral oncoproteins E6 and E7 playing a central role in disrupting cell cycle regulation by targeting host proteins such as p53 and pRb[3][2][1][4]. HPV-31 is one of the most frequent high-risk HPV types after HPV-16 and HPV-18 in cervical pathology. Detection is primarily via molecular diagnostics that identify viral DNA or expression of viral oncogenes.
