Human papillomavirus type 33 (HPV33) is a double-stranded DNA virus classified in the alpha-9 species group of the Alphapapillomavirus genus. It infects epithelial cells, can disrupt cell cycle control via its E6 and E7 proteins, and is considered a high-risk oncogenic type associated with cervical and other anogenital cancers. HPV33 genetics show multiple lineages and sublineages (A, B, and C; with A1, A2, and A3 sublineages in lineage A), with evidence that different sublineages may confer different cancer risks. Detection of HPV33 DNA is a biomarker in clinical settings for cancer screening. Preventive vaccines provide immunity against HPV33, but there are currently no approved direct antiviral drugs for HPV33 infection.
Vaccines act by inducing neutralizing antibodies against viral capsid proteins (L1 protein), preventing infection. Research into antivirals or immunotherapeutics may target viral proteins (E6, E7) to restore cell cycle control or induce apoptosis in infected cells.
