Overview

The Human papillomavirus type 35 (HPV35) L1 major capsid protein is the primary structural component of the HPV35 virion, a high-risk alpha-papillomavirus. This protein is responsible for the self-assembly of the viral capsid and plays a crucial role in the initial stages of infection by binding to host cell surface receptors, such as heparan sulfate proteoglycans (UniProt: P27232). HPV35 is strongly associated with cervical cancer and its precursors, particularly in populations of African descent where it is one of the most common high-risk types (PubMed: 31600155). Despite its clinical significance, HPV35 L1 is not included in current prophylactic vaccines like Gardasil 9, making it a key target for future multivalent vaccine development (PubMed: 32810207). Therapeutic strategies targeting this protein focus on the induction of neutralizing antibodies that prevent viral entry and subsequent oncogenic transformation.
