Overview

Human papillomavirus type 52 is a double-stranded DNA virus belonging to the Alphapapillomavirus genus. It is classified as one of the high-risk HPV types associated with the development of cervical and other anogenital cancers. HPV52 infects epithelial cells and expresses early proteins (notably E6 and E7) that can disrupt cellular regulation by targeting tumor suppressor proteins such as p53 and pRb, leading to dysplasia and, in chronic infection, the potential for malignant transformation. Globally, HPV52 is a prevalent oncogenic HPV genotype, particularly common in some Asian populations. Vaccines currently available effectively protect against infection with HPV52 and other high-risk HPV types.
