The intact human papillomavirus type 58 (HPV58) virion is a key target for neutralizing antibodies, which prevent infection and disease progression. The virion is a non-enveloped, icosahedral particle composed of L1 and L2 capsid proteins, encapsulating a circular double-stranded DNA genome. Neutralizing antibodies, primarily directed at L1, block viral attachment to host cells. Current vaccines utilize virus-like particles (VLPs) made from L1 to induce protective antibody responses against HPV58 and other HPV types. Persistent HPV58 infection is strongly associated with cervical cancer.
