The Human papillomavirus type 6 L1 major capsid protein is the principal structural component forming the outer shell of the virus. It self assembles into pentameric units called capsomeres, which further organize into an icosahedral capsid with T=7 symmetry and approximately 50 nm diameter. The assembled structure encapsulates and protects the viral genome during transmission. The L1 protein has intrinsic DNA-binding activity and plays a role in stabilizing the viral genome during intracellular trafficking after cell entry. Recombinant forms of this protein are used to create virus-like particles that serve as antigens in prophylactic vaccines such as Gardasil, eliciting strong neutralizing antibody responses that confer protection against infection by human papillomavirus type 6 and related types[3][2][4].
