Overview

Human papillomavirus type 68 (HPV68) is a non-enveloped double-stranded DNA virus in the Papillomaviridae family, specifically Alphapapillomavirus 7 species, classified by L1 gene sequence similarity (≥70% species, <90% type). It is probably carcinogenic (IARC Group 2A), associated with cervical cancer (detected in ~0.8-2% of cases), particularly its ME180 subtype which confers cell immortalization; detection challenges exist with certain PCR assays like SPF10 or MY09-MY11. Variants include HPV68a and HPV68b, forming phylogenetic branches.
