The human parainfluenza virus type 1 hemagglutinin-neuraminidase protein is a multifunctional surface glycoprotein located on the viral envelope. It binds to host cell sialic acid residues, mediating virus attachment and entry, and possesses neuraminidase activity that cleaves sialic acids, facilitating viral spread. The HN protein is the main antigenic determinant for protective antibodies and is the principal target for neutralizing agents, making it an important focus for vaccine and therapeutic development. Antigenic diversity and immune selection pressures drive strain evolution and can impact the efficacy of antibody-based therapies and vaccines.
