Overview

Human parainfluenza virus type 2 (HPIV-2) is a member of the Paramyxoviridae family, classified under the genus Rubulavirus, and is an enveloped, negative-sense, single-stranded RNA virus[1][3][4]. Its genome encodes six structural proteins, including hemagglutinin-neuraminidase (HN) and fusion (F) surface glycoproteins which are critical for receptor binding and host cell entry[1][3]. HPIV-2 is a major causative agent of acute respiratory tract infections, especially croup, in children, but can also result in bronchitis, bronchiolitis, and pneumonia[1][4]. The virus can persist in populations due to both antigenic drift and immune evasion, yet currently lacks an approved targeted antiviral or vaccine. Detection relies primarily on molecular or immunological assays, and ribavirin is occasionally considered in severe cases though not officially approved for HPIV-2[4]. HPIV-2 infection poses significant risk in vulnerable populations and is an important concern for pediatric and respiratory infectious disease management.
