Human parainfluenza virus type 3 (HPIV-3) is a single-stranded, negative-sense RNA virus in the Paramyxoviridae family. It is a significant respiratory pathogen, particularly affecting infants and young children, causing bronchiolitis, bronchitis, and pneumonia. Transmission occurs through respiratory droplets or direct contact. There are no licensed vaccines or specific antiviral treatments currently available.
Ribavirin and favipiravir show some in vitro efficacy, but there are no licensed antiviral treatments for HPIV-3 infection. Management remains supportive.
