Overview

BK polyomavirus (BKPyV), also known as Human polyomavirus 1, is a small, non-enveloped DNA virus belonging to the Polyomaviridae family. It is highly prevalent worldwide and establishes lifelong latency in renal tissues and urinary tract epithelium. Reactivation can cause significant disease in immunocompromised patients, most notably kidney transplant recipients, leading to polyomavirus-associated nephropathy (PVAN) and graft dysfunction/loss. Diagnosis relies on detection of viral DNAemia or viruria using PCR-based assays. Current treatment options are limited, with management focusing on reducing immunosuppression.
