Overview

Human rod precursor cells are unipotent precursor cells in the developing human retina that are committed to becoming rod photoreceptors. These precursors express key transcription factors including NRL, NR2E3, and CRX, which direct their fate toward rod photoreceptors rather than cones or other retinal cell types[1][2][5]. They undergo terminal differentiation to produce mature rod cells required for scotopic (dim light) vision[4]. Human rod precursor cells have been investigated as a source for cell replacement therapies in retinal degenerative diseases, serving as an intermediate stage between pluripotent stem cells and functional rod photoreceptors[5][8].
