Human Rotavirus Live Attenuated Virus

Molecular classification
Virus, Live Attenuated Virus, Reoviridae, Rotavirus
01

Overview

The human rotavirus live attenuated virus is a weakened form of the wild-type human rotavirus, used as an oral vaccine to prevent severe gastroenteritis in infants and young children. It replicates locally in the small intestine, stimulating mucosal and systemic immunity. Key antigens are VP7 (G-protein) and VP4 (P-protein) which induce neutralizing antibodies. Vaccines include Rotarix (monovalent, human strain) and RotaTeq (pentavalent, bovine/human reassortant).

Mechanism of action

Stimulates mucosal and systemic immunity through limited replication in the small intestine, leading to production of neutralizing antibodies (IgA and IgG) against viral proteins, particularly VP7 and VP4.
