The human sodium iodide symporter (NIS) is a transmembrane glycoprotein responsible for the active transport of iodide into cells, primarily thyroid follicular cells. It plays a crucial role in thyroid hormone biosynthesis and is a key target for radioiodine-based diagnostics and therapeutics, particularly in thyroid cancer. NIS expression is also observed in other tissues, including salivary glands, gastric mucosa, mammary glands, and some tumors, offering potential diagnostic and therapeutic opportunities beyond thyroid diseases.
Active transport of iodide ions into cells, driven by the sodium gradient, enabling radioiodine uptake for imaging and therapy. Competitively inhibited by anions such as perchlorate and thiocyanate.
