Human Telomerase Reverse Transcriptase (hTERT)

01

Overview

Human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) is the catalytic subunit of the enzyme telomerase, which is essential for maintaining chromosome ends (telomeres). hTERT forms the core catalytic component of the telomerase complex, working together with an RNA template subunit (telomerase RNA component, TERC). Its primary function is to add repetitive DNA sequences (TTAGGG in humans) to the ends of chromosomes, counteracting progressive shortening that occurs during DNA replication and thus preserving genomic integrity. Dysregulation or reactivation of hTERT expression enables unlimited proliferation, making it a biomarker for malignancy and an attractive target for anti-cancer therapies.
